The genre is generally characterized by mysteries that contain no explicit sex, excessive gore, or gratuitous violence; usually featuring an amateur detective, they have a confined setting and characters who know one another. Spur Awards The Spur Award is an annual literary prize awarded by the Western Writers of America. Founded in 1953 with only four categories (western novel, historical novel, juvenile and short story), the award today has expanded to include 16 categories in both fiction and non-fiction. ALSC Notables List Each year the Association for Library Service to Children, a division of the American Library Association, identifies the best of the best in children's books. See The List
Coretta Scott King Award The Coretta Scott King Book Award is presented annually by the Coretta Scott King Committee of the American Library Association's Ethnic Multicultural Information Exchange Round Table (EMIERT). The award is given to an African American author and an African American illustrator of children's and young adult literature for an outstandingly inspirational and educational contribution. Michael L. Printz Award The Printz Award is given by the American Library Association to the author of a book that exemplifies literary excellence in young adult literature. See The List
