Digital Studio at Northside

The mission of the Digital Studio is to provide library customers with access to cutting edge video, photo and graphics editing programs. The studio is a place where aspiring filmmakers can learn to take their ideas from inception to completion, where photographers and digital artists make their unique vision reality, a place for musicians to create and edit their own music and where web designers and digital communicators share it all with the world. It’s also a place for people who simply want to restore and preserve precious historic and family media. It’s a place where people of all ages and levels of knowledge can create, share and encourage each other.

Final Cut Pro X, the newest release of the professional video post-production software.
Final Cut Pro Studio, professional video post-production suite including Final Cut Pro 7, Soundtrack Pro, Motion, DVD Studio Pro and Color.
The Adobe CS5.5 creative suite, including Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, Premiere Pro, After Effects, Flash, Acrobat and Dreamweaver. Adobe CS6 Master Collection is available only in the Video Editing Booth.
iLife 11 Suite including iMovie, iPhoto, GarageBand, and iDVD.
iWork 09 Suite including Pages, Numbers and Keynote.
Blender, the powerful open source 3D animation creation software.

Equipment in the Digital Studio:

8 Mac Pro workstations.
Production Studio including green screen, tripods, and lighting.
Audio Recording Booth including a Mac Mini computer, USB music keyboard, and microphones.
Video Editing Booth including a Mac Pro workstation and a 27" LED monitor. Photo editing can also be done in this booth.
Canon Powershot G-12, microphones and lights for video production.
Canopus Analog to digital converters for digitizing, Vinyl, Audio Cassette, VHS and other formats to digital media. (Please note: We do not have an 8mm projector. We have the conversion equipment, but you'll need to bring a projector.)
Epson V600 scanner for digitizing photos, slides, and film negatives.

The Production Studio, Audio Booth and Video Booth require reservations. Please call 231.5500 to make a reservation.

Upcoming Digital Studio Classes

After Effects Basics Learn the basics of Adobe's 3D animation program, After Effects. Some experience with Adobe programs, like Photoshop or video editing programs, like iMovie or Final Cut Pro, is necessary.

Digital Photography 2 In part two of Digital Photography we will use Adobe Photoshop and Adobe Bridge to organize photos, and use automation to resize, watermark, and batch edit them. Prerequisite: Introduction to Digital Photography or some experience with Photoshop.

Final Cut Pro X Basics Create your own 30-45 second video spot using the professional grade video editing software. This class builds on techniques learned in iMovie 2. Prerequisite: iMovie 2.

GarageBand Learn the basic operations of GarageBand, the audio recording and editing software from Apple.

Illustrator 2 Build on the techniques learned in Illustrator Basics to create your own logo, cartoon and letterhead. Prerequisite: Illustrator Basics.

Illustrator 2: Logos Build on the techniques learned in Illustrator Basics to create your own logo. Prerequisite: Illustrator Basics.

Illustrator Basics Learn the basics of creating graphic designs and images from photos and creating unique material using the basic tools and processes of Illustrator.

iMovie 1 Create an original video with a photo background, animated text and video effects. This is a great class for beginners.

iMovie 2 Edit your own digital video with iMovie. Add music, titles and video effects, and remove video you don't want. Bringing your own video on digital media is recommended, but not required. Prerequisite: iMovie 1.

InDesign Basics Learn the most powerful layout program in the industry. Use textboxes and paragraph settings to better organize your copy and save time by using presets while creating a multi-page document such as fliers and brochures. Prerequisites: Adobe Photoshop and Adobe Illustrator.

Introduction to Digital Photography Learn the basics of indoor and outdoor digital photography, and edit your photos in iPhoto and Photoshop. Feel free to bring your own digital, stand-alone camera, or use your smartphone camera.

Introduction to Keynote Learn to use iWork's presentation program, Keynote. We'll go over how to make a simple presentation slideshow.

Introduction to Mac We will cover the basics of using Apple software and hardware. No experience with Macs is necessary.

Introduction to Numbers Learn to use iWork's spreadsheet program, Numbers. We'll create spreadsheets for home and office organization.

Introduction to Pages Learn to use iWork's word processing and desktop publishing program, Pages. We'll work with templates for flyers and cards, and learn to format your own document.

iPhoto 1 Enhance your digital photos and create a slideshow with music and text. This is a great class for beginners. We recommend bringing your own pictures on a flash drive or other media, but it is not required.
