The Lexington Public Library announces the introduction of a new e-mail newsletter designed especially for middle school kids. “Tween Reads," offered through Lexington Public Library’s online NextReads newsletter service, is published monthly and includes a variety of great reading suggestions that are sure to appeal to the middle school crowd. “Tween Reads" features fun and fascinating novels and the occasional nonfiction book ranging from new and recently released titles to amazing older books that readers have yet to discover.

Subscribing to “Tween Reads" or any of the other NextReads newsletters is easy. No library card is necessary--just an e-mail address. Additional fiction and nonfiction newsletter topics include Biography and Memoir, Fantasy, Mystery, Nature and Science, and Audiobooks; there are also two children’s newsletters and one for teens. Newsletters are sent on a monthly or every-other-month basis, and include up to 12 book recommendations each. Newsletters link directly to the library catalog, so subscribers can place a hold or request a title immediately. Even those library patrons without email addresses can take advantage of the newsletters by viewing them online, either at the library or from any Internet access point.

Interested? Visit www.lexpublib.org/nextreads, or go to the library’s home page and click on the NextReads logo to subscribe.

For Preservation Month 2008, Clay Lancaster’s Warwick Foundation in cooperation with the Central Gallery will present an exhibition of photographs featuring Central Kentucky architecture from the Civil War to the turn of the 20th century. Based in part on Lancaster’s Vestiges of the Venerable City (1978), the exhibition will highlight structures in the Richardsonian Romanesque style, the Queen Anne style, the Italianate style, the Shingle style, the Eastlake style, the Second Empire style, as well as eclectic and vernacular buildings of the period. Elaborate scroll-saw work, carved marble, intricate masonry, stained and etched glass, corner turrets, and impressive massing characterize the best work of this Romantic era in American architecture. The exhibit runs from April 12 through May 18. A Gallery Hop reception from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday, April 18. Receptions at the Central Library Gallery are sponsored by the Friends of the Library.

Clay Lancaster’s Warwick Foundation in cooperation with the Central Library Gallery will present an exhibition of photographs featuring local architecture from the Civil War to the turn of the 20th century. The exhibit will run from Saturday, April 12, through Sunday, May 18.

Based in part on Lancaster’s Vestiges of the Venerable City, the exhibition will highlight structures in the Richardsonian Romanesque style, the Queen Anne style, the Italianate style, the Shingle style, the Eastlake style, the Second Empire style, as well as eclectic and vernacular buildings of the period. Elaborate scroll-saw work, carved marble, intricate masonry, stained and etched glass, corner turrets, and impressive massing characterize the best work of this Romantic era in American architecture.

The exhibit will kick off with an opening lecture at 5:30 p.m. Sunday, April 13, by Patrick Snadon, an architectural historian with the College of Deisgn, Architecture, Art, and Planning at the University of Cincinnati and co-author of The Domestic Architecture of Benjamin Henry Latrobe. A reception will follow the lecture. Tickets for the event are $15 and may be purchased by calling 231-5559.

As part of this year’s One Book One Lexington, which features the book The Greatest Generation by Tom Brokaw, you are invited to learn about victory gardens. “Gardening for Victory" will provide a backward glance at one of the largest and most innovative national gardening programs--one which changed the way we grow, prepare, and feel about the food on our tables today. Learn how to re-create the recommended victory gardens and menus of the First and Second World Wars, take a look at a few artifacts like posters, seed catalogs, manuals, and cookbooks--and finally, take home a live, organically-grown heirloom tomato plant as a bit of living history.

7 p.m. Tuesday, April 15--Tates Creek Branch (231-5580)

2 p.m. Wednesday, April 16--Eagle Creek Branch (231-5560)

7 p.m. Thursday, April 17--Beaumont Branch (231-5570)

10 a.m. Saturday, April 19--Central Library (231-5531)

2 p.m. Saturday, April 19--Northside Branch (231-5590)

The program for adults is free, but reservations are required and may be made by calling the branch where you want to attend.
