Summer reading helps thousands keep learning

Nearly 12,000 children participated in this year?s Summer Reading Program at the Lexington Public Library, a 5.25-percent increase in the number of participants over last summer.

The library’s Summer Reading Program challenges children to keep track of their reading in June and July in exchange for coupons and prizes, including a free book. A total of 11,994 children started the program, and 4,433 children turned in completed reading logs. For most age groups, completed logs represented 15 hours or more of summer reading.

In addition to reading, the program included entertaining, educational events throughout the summer at all six library locations. More than 8,000 people attended the various events this summer.

Studies show that reading is one of the most important activities for continuing to learn over the long summer break, and that visiting the public library is one of the most important indicators of summer learning.

In addition to the children?s Summer Reading Program, about 1,900 people picked up reading logs for the Adult Summer Reading Program, with about 500 adults completing logs and entering for prizes.
