LED exit signs in Lexington
By Stu Johnson, WEKU
In the years ahead, illuminated EXIT signs at many of Lexington’s non-profit agencies should shine longer. An environmental group will provide them with low-energy L-E-D lights. The aim is to replace traditional light bulbs used in exit signs with the longer lasting, low-energy L-E-D lights. Bluegrass Pride program manager Lauren Bennett says some 700 signs in Lexington non-profits now have L-E-D lights.
“I think saving money is an added benefit…of saving energy..especially for non profits..they’re always looking for some extra funds for their programs,” said Bennett.
By switching to L-E-D lights, Bennett says they can save 24 dollars per sign per year. The retrofit kits are available at the Bluegrass Pride office. For homeowners, she adds energy audit kits that measure power usage around the home are also available through the Lexington Public Library.
“Different thermometers to measure your refrigerator and freezer temperature…your hot water heater temperature. There’s a laser thermometer that will show you really easily may by areas that need a little ceiling, a little caulking, or weather stripping. We’ve also got a kilowatt meter which is really cool, you plug it into an outlet and you plug any appliance into it and it will tell you how much power it is drawing,” added Bennett.
Bennett says there is other energy saving information included in the kits.
