African Americans' Escape to Freedom: Joining the United States Colored Troops

Over 28,000 African American men in Kentucky were finally allowed to join the fight during the Civil War in June 1864. We will follow several of them from the period of their enslavement, to their escape and service in the military. One was enslaved to Senator Garrett Davis of Bourbon County and another to Thomas Hunt of Fayette County. Registration recommended.
