English as a Second Language Conversation Courses

This English Conversation Group is for adults who speak English as a Second Language and who have taken beginning or advanced courses in the past. We focus on practical, everyday topics: making proper phone calls, going to job interviews, asking for directions, stating personal opinions and more. Students from over 30 countries have participated in this class and have learned about new traditions, ways of living, and people that they had never known before. If you are a non-native English speaker who wants to have fun and meet people from all over the world while practicing your spoken English, than this is the place for you.

Bilingual Cafe

The Bilingual Cafe is an informal language exchange made up of people who are dedicated to practicing their spoken English or Spanish, depending on where they're from. It helps people to learn new vocabulary in another language, and to learn about culture and understanding between people from different corners of the world. The Bilingual Cafe meets every other week, on Saturday afternoons, and we drink coffee, eat donuts, and more than anything else, we TALK. The program has been made possible by a partnership between Outreach Services and Bluegrass Literacy and meets at the Village branch of the Lexington Public Library (2185 Versailles Rd.)

Operation Read helps adults in acquiring the reading and writing skills they desire to achieve their personal goals. ProLiteracy certified tutors teach the students in individual settings and in small group instruction throughout the Lexington area.

  • Our Basic literacy program serves adults who read below the 6th grade level.
  • Our English-as-a- second language (ESL) program serves adults from other countries who are seeking to improve their English language skills.
  • To accomplish our programs, we offer 3 Basic and 3 ESL workshops to train our volunteers through a 14 hour ProLiteracy Tutor Training. These are held throughout the year.

The National Literacy Foundation reports that 15% of Lexington's population cannot read above Level One. That means not being able to read a map, prescription, or fill out an application for a job.

How can you help? Operation Read is a private, non-profit literacy agency, which makes a permanent, positive change in a student's quality of life. We need you to help improve literacy in our community. Become a tutor and make a difference! . Please call us at (859) 254-9964, or e-mail Astrid Tangarife at atangarife@qx.net.

All donations to help Operation Read make a difference are tax-deductible!
