The Lexington Public Library Board of Trustees established the Library Foundation in 1997 in order to provide funding for additional programs and services. The foundation’s annual appeal to individual supporters raises money to fund a different project each year. These projects have included digitization of the library’s newspaper archive, Baby’s 1st Library Card (which gives a special library card, book and bib to each new mother at the University of Kentucky Hospital) and Kindercard (which aims to sign up for a library card every kindergartner in the Fayette County Public Schools).

The foundation’s annual Night of Literary Feasts, first held in 2008, brings authors to be guests of honor at dinners throughout Lexington.
