The Friends of the Library were founded in 1967. They support the library through the sale of donated used books both at their bookstore – the Friends Book Cellar – and their semi-annual book sales. The Book Cellar is run by 1.5 employees and 283 volunteers, who maintain 1.3 miles of display shelves in the Central Library’s lower level.
Last year, the Friends raised $266,250. The Friends are the primary sponsor of the Summer Reading Program and the sole sponsor of Central Library Gallery receptions. Other recent projects include the One Book One Lexington community reading program and the Kentucky Room’s Local History Index.
