The Friends Bookstore welcomes volunteers in all areas of store operations:

Bookseller

Work in the store assisting customers and cashiering. A great opportunity to interact with our customers, who represent a broad spectrum of interested and engaged readers from all walks of life.

Sorting Room Assistant

The Friends Bookstore receives donations of thousands of books, magazines, DVDs, and CDs every year. The sorting room is where volunteers determine which section of the store in which these items are to be shelved.

Pricing and Shelving

Learn how prices are determined and how we shelve items for most effective store display. Volunteers may choose to work in most of our sections, from novels and mysteries to cookbooks, artbooks, and lots more.

Online Sales Assistant

The bookstore operates a robust online sales department. This is where our more valuable items received a broader exposure than would be possible in our store. Learn how books are researched and priced.

Seasonal opportunities

The bookstore holds two annual sales – in April and October – and help is always needed to set up the displays, assist customers, and tear down afterwards. Another great opportunity to interact with our customers and other volunteers.

The bookstore is open Monday-Saturday, 10-4, and from 1-5 on first Sundays of each month. Proceeds from our operations benefit regular library offerings, such as the summer reading program. We are located on the lower level of the library’s central location at 140 East Main Street in downtown Lexington.
