New Versailles Road Library Branch to be named Marksbury Family Branch
Lexington, Kentucky (March 9, 2022) – Lexington Public Library and Lexington Public Library Foundation are honored to announce that the Marksbury Family Foundation has committed the lead gift for the capital campaign to rebuild the library branch at the corner of Versailles Road and Village Drive. In recognition of their generosity, the new facility will be named the Marksbury Family Branch when it opens in 2024.
Lexington, Kentucky (March 9, 2022) – Lexington Public Library and Lexington Public Library Foundation are honored to announce that the Marksbury Family Foundation has committed the lead gift for the capital campaign to rebuild the library branch at the corner of Versailles Road and Village Drive. In recognition of their generosity, the new facility will be named the Marksbury Family Branch when it opens in 2024.
The Library purchased the site in late 2020 after leasing the facility for 15 years, with plans to demolish the current building. A new two-story facility will replace it with nearly triple the amount of space available for library services. The new building will include community and study rooms, a dedicated classroom, makerspace, outdoor reading area, expanded adult and children’s areas, and a drive-thru window where customers can pick up and return borrowed materials. The Library estimates that it will serve approximately 1 million visitors per year at this location. The Library Foundation has committed to raising $5.3 million in support of this $17 million project through a public-private partnership.
The Marksbury Family Foundation, founded by Davis Marksbury, invests in innovative projects that provide sustainable, life-changing opportunities for individuals and communities. “We are excited to invest in this community-wide resource, which offers countless educational resources to everyone in the greater Lexington area,” said Logan Marksbury, President of the Marksbury Family Foundation. “Our family has been very fortunate, and we love to provide new opportunities for others to succeed through our Foundation.” The Marksbury Family Foundation has supported the University of Kentucky, Lexington Leadership Foundation’s Woodhill Community Center, Blue Grass Community Foundation’s Good Giving Challenge, and many other projects in the educational and entrepreneurial spaces.
This donation is the single largest commitment in the history of the Lexington Public Library Foundation, which has supported our public library system since 1997. “The fundraising success of the Library Foundation speaks to the commitment of our donors and the impact of the Lexington Public Library system,” said Erin Serrate, Chair of the Library Foundation Board. “Like the individuals it serves, the Library has unlimited potential, and our role is to ensure that the Library has the financial resources it needs to meet our community’s educational needs.”
The Library Foundation supports new projects, capital needs, and specialty programs. Recent investments include Destination Kindergarten (with the PNC Foundation’s signature Grow Up Great initiative), the Eastside Branch (contributing $1.3M for the project), and the Kloiber Foundation STEAM Lab, which will open later this month.
“Our Library system thrives when our community comes together,” said Executive Director Heather Dieffenbach. “We are grateful for the support of the Marksbury Family Foundation and the leadership of the Lexington Public Library Foundation. Carly Muetterties is the Director of Learning Design at Newsela, an edtech company. She works with a team to provide educational resources that support teachers in creating authentic and meaningful learning experiences for their students. A former social studies teacher, Carly has a passion for emboldening educators to enact inquiry-based learning and provide opportunities for civic engagement. Carly has a Bachelor of Arts in Secondary Education in Social Studies (University of Kentucky), Master of Arts in History (UK), Master of Arts in German Studies (UK), Master of Arts in Education (Georgetown College), and a Ph.D. in Education Sciences (UK). Carly is active in civic organizations. Across her career, she has volunteered and collaborated with several national and state organizations. At present, she is on the Programmatic Board of CivicLex, executive council for the Kentucky Council for the Social Studies, and chairs the Kentucky Civic Education Coalition.

Lynda has been a member of the Commerce Lexington senior management team since 2000. In her current position she leads the Membership & Engagement division that is responsible for membership recruitment and retention, non-dues revenue development, and programs and events. Prior to working at the Chamber, she worked in several membership organizations including the National Tour Association, Association Management Resources and the Ann Arbor Board of Realtors and for Hyatt Regency Hotels in Lexington, Memphis, TN, San Antonio, TX and Kansas City, MO. She currently serves on board of Junior Achievement of the Bluegrass. Lynda is a native of Lexington and an alumna of the University of Kentucky.
Library meeting rooms are available for individuals, non-profit, for profit, study groups, and community organizations seeking to hold meetings, trainings, and workshops.

Shawntaye Hopkins is the Marketing and Communications Director at the University of Kentucky J. David Rosenberg College of Law. Before landing at the University of Kentucky, Shawntaye worked as a newspaper reporter, a public relations specialist at another university, and as a communications associate for a nonprofit, nonpartisan organization serving state governments. Shawntaye has a bachelor’s degree in journalism from Western Kentucky University. Her hobbies include reading and writing about books, mostly fiction. Shawntaye is originally from Louisville, Kentucky, but she has resided in Lexington, Kentucky, since 2006.

DeLaine Bender, CAE, is the Vice President of AMR Management Services, a Lexington-based association management company serving national and international associations and professional societies. Her responsibilities include marketing and business development, support for new clients, and management of association staff. A career nonprofit executive, she served as Executive Director of several associations before joining the AMR executive team in 2017.
DeLaine is an active member of the American Society of Association Executives and earned the Certified Association Executive (CAE) credential, the highest professional credential in the association industry, in 2012. She earned a bachelor’s degree in journalism from the University of Oklahoma. She lives in Lexington with her husband and together they have five adult children.

Alex Garcia is originally from Los Angeles, California. He attended the University of Kentucky in 2004 and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology in 2008. He then attended the University of Kentucky College of Law and earned his law degree in 2012. After graduating from law school, he began his legal career working at the Fayette Commonwealth’s Attorney Office prosecuting serious felony crimes such as murder, robbery, kidnapping, and assault. He then joined the Kentucky Attorney General’s Office as a Special Prosecutor in January 2020 and now focuses on complex criminal cases statewide. Alex also has the honor of serving as an Officer in the United States Army Reserve and serves as an attorney for the Judge Advocate General’s Corp (JAG). Alex has been a member of multiple local organizations in Fayette County and he currently sits on the board of Partners for Youth, a non-profit organization, and the Fayette County Bar Association. He enjoys promoting and observing positive youth development within the Lexington community and believes in surrounding our youth with a positive community and providing mentorship to those who are at-risk.
Our commitment to listening, learning and changing is ongoing and our work is never complete. We affirm that we achieve more together because of our differences, not despite them. When all voices are heard, we are stronger.
